Latest Snow Updates

North America sees a major mid-winter reset after Storm Fern, Japan remains deep in peak winter conditions, and Europe welcomes colder weather with fresh snowfall and high alpine activity.

Europe Weekly Snow Roundup

Colder temperatures and regular snowfall are restoring wintry conditions across most regions. Snow quality remains strong, terrain is largely open, and the Pyrenees currently lead Europe with the deepest bases—though avalanche danger is elevated in some areas.

North America Weekly Snow Roundup

Storm Fern delivers a major mid-winter reset. The Northeast and Midwest emerge as standout regions after heavy snowfall, while western resorts stay drier with more spring-like conditions. In Canada, deep snowpacks are holding strong under intense cold.

Japan Weekly Snow Roundup

Japan remains deep in peak winter. Exceptional snowfall across Honshu and Hokkaido has built historic base depths, with some resorts exceeding 4–5 metres. Extreme cold is preserving ultra-light powder, while avalanche and safety warnings remain widespread.

Winter Consolidates Across the Northern Hemisphere

Winter delivered a mixed but encouraging picture across the Northern Hemisphere this week. Japan surged ahead, while North America saw major Sierra dumps alongside an expanding Arctic freeze across the east. Europe remained the outlier — fresh snow boosted northern regions, but the Alps stayed largely dry, though colder air is now in place.

Arctic Blast Brings Fresh Snow North. Alps On Standby

Europe's winter story this week is one of contrasts. A strong Arctic blast has delivered significant fresh snow across Scandinavia, Scotland and northeastern Europe, boosting conditions where snow was needed most. Meanwhile, the Alps have stayed largely dry after early forecasts. That pattern is now poised to change, with wintry systems edging back into the north-western Alps later this week — cold air is in place, and fresh snow could finally arrive where slopes have been waiting.

Powder Where It Counts — Rockies & Tahoe Lead This Week

North America's snow story this week is all about contrasts: Pacific storms have dumped substantial snow in the Sierra, with Palisades Tahoe recording up to two feet, while bitter cold and deep freezes have settled across the Midwest and East. Some West Coast resorts battled rain-washed snowpacks before the big dumps returned, while the inland Rockies and Great Lakes saw fresh powder and expanding bases as Arctic air gripped the continent. Overall, it's a dynamic blend of heavy snow, cold snaps, and pockets still waiting for consistent winter — a classic early-season North American shuffle.

Japan Tops the Snow Charts

Japan's winter pulse strengthened this week — Hokkaido's big resorts delivered significant snowfall, with Kiroro posting 90 cm in three days and Niseko over two feet of fresh powder, while cold, unsettled conditions kept flakes falling frequently across the north. On Honshu, ski areas like Nozawa Onsen are near full terrain open, and a mix of mild spells and cooling trends suggests more reliable snow at higher elevations ahead. From deep bases to mid-season surge potential, Japan is asserting itself as a powder play in early January.
