The best time to ski isn't when you think

Deeper snow, fewer crowds, cheaper flights. The data makes a compelling case for Easter.

The Data Is Clear:
The Best Time to Ski Is Later Than You Think...

March & April!

However you measure it, March and April represent the peak of the ski season — not its end. For Europe in particular, data from winter 2025/26 makes this case compelling.

The reason is simple: snow accumulates in layers all winter. Each storm adds to the stack. Even when warmer spells compress the surface, the base keeps building. By March, most European resorts are sitting on the deepest snowpack of the entire season — right at the tipping point before the long spring melt begins.

Myth: There's No Snow Left at Easter

The data tells a different story. Head to snow-forecast.com, pick any major European resort, and check the snow report. Take Courchevel: as of late March 2026, base depths are well over a metre, with fresh snow still falling. This isn't an outlier — it's the pattern.

Spring doesn't mean there's no powder

The snow-depth chart tells its own story: even by late March, this winter's base is still building.

The late-season snowfall data backs this up: significant snowfalls regularly arrive in March and April, adding to the base rather than eroding it. Here we can see cold temperatures and heavy snowfall well into the second week of April 2026:

So, the science confirms it: if you want the most guaranteed snow conditions, Easter is the best time to go.

The raw data is only part of the appeal. By March, the days are noticeably longer, the sun is higher, and the visibility is sharper. That combination — deep snowpack in the morning, softening to forgiving spring snow by afternoon — is what seasoned skiers quietly plan their season around.

Add cheaper flights, better-value accommodation, and resorts that go all-out with music festivals and extended après-ski, and Easter starts to look less like a compromise and more like the obvious choice.

TLDR:

Go skiing or snowboarding in March or April. The snowpack is at its deepest, the sun is out, and everyone else is still at home convinced there's no snow.
